* Drug maker Nicholas Piramal India Ltd (NICH.BO: Quote) rose 7.8 percent to 270 rupees, its highest close in more than a month, after the company said it would spin off its novel drug discovery research operations into a separate company.
* Shares in 3i Infotech (TIIN.BO: Quote), Biocon Ltd (BION.BO: Quote), Havell's India (HVEL.BO: Quote) and Tech Mahindra Ltd (TEML.BO: Quote) rose between 4.9 and 10 percent after the National Stock Exchange allowed derivatives trading in them from Sept 6. The exchange also included 10 more companies for derivatives trading.
* Cable maker Paramount Communications (PCML.BO: Quote) gained 5.6 percent higher at 28.45 rupees on media reports that it is set to buy UK-based AEI Cables, an unit of TT Electronics (TTG.L: Quote), for about 2.6 billion rupees.
* Realtor Ganesh Housing Corp Ltd (GHFC.BO: Quote) touched a high of 455 rupees after a block deal for 125,001 shares at 440 rupees was struck on the NSE. The shares have eased to 448.05 rupees, up 4.09 percent.
* Software firm IT People India Ltd (ITPL.BO: Quote) fell 8.4 percent to 31.50 rupees after it withdrew its follow-on public issue to raise 452.5 million rupees due to lack of response from retail investors. The firm said some strategic investors had proposed long-term equity instead.
