``The bonus announcement was a surprise, but it will help improve the stock's liquidity,'' said Ballabh Modani, an analyst with Mumbai-based Enam Securities Pvt., who recommends investors buy the stock. ``It's a positive for the GAIL stock, especially since it hasn't been in top form in the last few weeks.''

``A cut of 5 to 10 percent will make no difference to inflation,'' Shahra said. ``If they are serious about bringing prices lower, they have to do more than that.''

Tata needs funds to buy the two Ford luxury units and to build the $2,500 Nano, dubbed the world's cheapest car when it was unveiled in January. The company may raise $3 billion in loans to fund the purchase, three people with direct knowledge of the deal said on March 5.

Industrial production ``is rising on account of higher sales of consumer goods and stronger exports,'' said Sujan Hajra, chief economist at Anand Rathi Securities Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai.

``The write-off on Larsen was very small and the company made no changes to its sales and profit forecast,'' said Deven Choksey, chief executive officer at K.R. Choksey Shares & Securities, who helps manage $550 million for wealthy individuals. ``The extent of the fall wasn't warranted.''

Citigroup has an ``overweight'' recommendation on consumer stocks, telecommunications, information technology and financials, where earnings growth is less volatile, Narain said. It has an ``underweight'' rating on utilities and power and cut its rating on capital goods to ``neutral'' from ``overweight.''

Citigroup on Jan. 7 had set a target for the Sensitive Index at between 23,950 and 25,050 by the end of this year. The bank will review the Sensex target, Narain said.
