Tata Steel Ltd, the world's sixth-largest steel maker, on Thursday said consolidated net profit fell 60 percent for the year to March 2009, lagging market expectations. Tata Steel reported a net profit after minority interest and share of profit of associates of 49.5 billion rupees ($1.02 billion) in 2008/09, compared to a consolidated net profit of 123.5 billion rupees reported a year ago. Consolidated net sales for the year rose to 1.46 trillion rupees from 1.31 trillion rupees reported a year earlier.
Unitech Ltd, India's No. 2 listed realty firm, reported a 28 percent fall in full-year profit. Unitech reported a consolidated net profit of 11.98 billion rupees ($247 million) for its financial year ended March, compared with 16.62 billion rupees in the previous year. Total income fell 22.5 percent to 33.15 billion rupees from 42.80 billion in the previous year.
